Born in 1953, an architect since 1981, and a winner of PAN XII, Patrick Chavannes established his own office in 1982 upon receiving his first commission from the RIVP for the design of 80 apartments in the Rue des Prairies in Paris’ 20th arrondissement. In 1989 and 1990 he was awarded the Palmarès de l’Habitat by the City of Paris for his Rue des Prairies housing and his combined housing and artists’ studios in the Rue de Bagnolet.
Patrick Chavannes teaches at the Brittany Architecture School and was an advisor to the Ministry of Public Facilities until 2001.
Today, Agence Patrick Chavannes has expertise in the three areas of architecture, urban and landscape design. It consists of a multidisciplinary team of around 30 architects, urban and landscape designers, technical and computer draftspersons. An administrative team manages the office’s financial, social and logistical affairs.
The office has acquired enormous know-how in the field of urban design, from the carrying out of urban analyses to the execution of projects from the scale of the individual plot to that of entire urban areas. Most particularly, it has an expertise in a range of urban issues - from mobility and transport which it has addressed in a series of projects for multimodal hubs to mix, density and urban form and the crucial issue of scale. In addition to this, the office has enormous experience in the area of landscape design thanks to its fully integrated team of highly qualified and experienced landscape designers.
The office is also home to a sustainability research centre which trains the team in such areas as eco-districts and the complex question of sustainable urban development. This research centre is headed by an urban geographer who holds a Cifre and acts as a consultant to the office.
Patrick Chavannes was first invited to work in China on major international competitions in 2003. In 2008 he established an office in the city of Canton in which approximately 15 French and Chinese architects and urban and landscape designers work on both competitions and direct commissions for large urban design projects as well as the execution phases of projects for the redesign of public spaces. This year, the office has completed a number of significant projects including a winning project for the urban remodelling of the Island of Nankin which was has been recognised for its environmentally excellent urban and landscape design solution.
