In 2007 the municipality of Fontainebleau launched an ideas competition with the aim of rethinking the functioning, use and quality of the public spaces in the centre of the town. Despite the unquestionable intrinsic qualities of the town, it has today a somewhat stressed character, more dominated by traffic than by its historic past. The objective of this exercise is to create a new image as a means of enhancing its attractiveness and rediscovering the quality of life for which Fontainebleau is famous.
The main areas for reflection are as follows:
• Creation of an element which gives the centre of the town its own easily recognisable visual identity
• Creation of a public square devoted principally to pedestrians by reducing surface parking and supporting the creation of underground garages
• Design of a spatial solution which guarantees the equitable sharing of the street space between pedestrians, bicycles, the disabled and car traffic.
• Improvement of the connection between the château and the town centre as a means of raising the importance of the town centre in terms of tourism
• Investigation of ways of using greenery and water
• Proposal for a lighting project for the existing architectural heritage
• Creation of a space for both spontaneous and organised public events
• Improvement of the status of urban art in the town
