TEXT_In the face of competition from such large, dynamic and nationally significant cities as Nantes and Rennes, Châ¬teaubriant must reaffirm its identity, highlight all its advantages and take positive measures in order to remain an attractive alternative location.
The arrival of the Tram Train in 2013 will improve the main square from the regional perspective but raises a series of questions regarding the functioning of the town.
The competition for the reorganisation of the Place de la Butte à Madame provides the opportunity to confirm the position of the town and readdress its attractiveness at the heart of the Pays de la Loire Region.
Our project develops a three-part strategy:
● Initially, we seek to re-establish the clear, unified geometry of the square.
● Then we propose to modify the levels of the square in order to make it more comfortable to use.
● Then, the work which we have carried out regarding the flow of pedestrians makes it possible to adjust this movement to create a square which is calmer and yet economically more dynamic. At the heart of this proposal is the establishment of a clear hierarchy of uses.
It appears to us essential that the historic façades of the centre – which are the source of the very identity of the town - regain their significance. To this end we have developed a landscape solution based on a high-quality green base and references to the moats which used to surround the town.
