The city of Taiyuan is a centre of the mining industry which is of national importance for China and which has consequently suffered from the typical pollution generated by intense economic activity.
Following the lead established by former mining areas in Europe, the project for managing the growth of the city seeks to encourage the economic and ecological transformation of the entire region through a diversification in its activities and ecological compensation in the form of the maintenance of agricultural activity in the city - both as a green lung and as a guarantor of a quality of life which combines the best of both the urban and the natural.
Besides defining the infrastructure necessary for the future functioning of the city, one of the principal elements of the project is the creation of a CBD, which is able to become an identifying factor for Taiyuan. This inserts itself effortlessly into the urban grain at the crossing point of the historical axes of development, creating a focus for the newly developed notion of centrality.
