TEXT_The significant demographic development of the conurbation of Toulouse has led to a considerable acceleration in the process of urbanisation over recent years, principally in the form of huge areas of single-family housing.
However, this scattered form of development threatens to destroy the existing urban grain and, hence, precisely those qualities which lie behind the appeal of the area while reinforcing the dysfunctioning which results from a lack of service infrastructure and common facilities together with a saturation of the road network.
In such a context, the municipal authorities responsible for the Toulouse Region launched the project for the realisation of the Urban North Boulevard which has the objective of structuring the urbanisation of the North of Toulouse around a major piece of transport infrastructure.
This study was thus launched with a number of multiple objectives:
• define the changes which the area was capable of absorbing
• estimate the new population which the area is able to absorb
• orient and then accompany the evolution of the area over time
This iterative and participative process made it possible to define the conditions for the more sustainable development of the area and to draw up an urban layout which will form the basis of a reference plan for the design while ensuring that the future intervention remains coherent: Photos of the existing development.
